The word “perm” often conjures up certain images from the past but the digital perm offers something quite different and modern. Rather than tight 1980’s style curls, the digital perm creates glamorous and long-lasting waves and curls. Think of more natural-looking, relaxed boho beach waves that will be much easier to style without the need for lengthy sessions with a curling tong, as well as added body and movement.
Unlike the older style “cold perm”, the digital perm is a “heat perm” system in which the temperature of each roller is software-controlled by a special machine and many styles can be achieved. It is not just for clients with straight hair, those with frizzy and curly hair can also use this system to tame their hair into softer frizz-free waves or curls.

The Process
Sessions will typically take around 2.5 to 3 hours. The first step is to wash the hair and apply a protein conditioner to help provide tensile strength if needed. Then a cream containing a chemical compound called ammonium thioglycolate is applied which makes physical changes to the hair’s cysteine linkage, softening the protein bonds and leaving the hair ready to be reshaped. The stylist will determine when the bonds are sufficiently softened, taking care not to over process the hair, and the cream is then washed out. The hair is left wet and rollers – the sizes depending on the style we wish to be achieved – are put on, which are then connected to the digital perm machine. The temperature of each roll is controlled by a software program which sets the curl, thermally reconditioning the hair. The hair is then treated with a mild solution of hydrogen peroxide neutraliser which seals the bonds back together and locks them into their new shape. The neutraliser is rinsed out and the hair is lightly dried and styled.
Aftercare
After you leave the salon you should not wash your hair or get it wet in any way during for the first 48-72 hours. Rain, perspiration and even steamy showers should all be avoided as moisture can block the oxidisation process which is still occurring. The neutraliser is still at work and your hair needs access to oxygen.
You must also avoid any kind of bending of the hair during this period, including wearing hats, clips or hairbands etc. as any undue pressure could result in permanent kinks.
You should not colour your hair for at least two weeks. We recommend using a professional quality shampoo and conditioner for chemically treated hair.

Is my hair suitable for Digital Perming?
It will not work if your hair is too damaged. It will not work on fully bleached hair. If you are unsure we recommend visiting us for a free consultation. The treatment can wash out existing colour.
How long does Digital Perming last?
Digital Perming will normally last from 3 to 6 months, depending on your hair.
Will Digital Perming damage my hair?
Digital Perming uses the chemical ammonium thioglycolate to alter and then reform the structure of the hair, but it should also feel smoother and healthier aferwards. We use high quality creams which also contain ingredients to protect and strengthen your hair as well as performing a pre-straightening mask treatment. Good aftercare is also beneficial. Probably the most important factor for good results is choosing an experienced stylist/salon.
Can I still straighten my hair?
Yes, you can still style it how you like. The curls will return when it becomes wet again. It is like styling with natural curls.

We also require an £80 deposit for our Digital Perm service as it requires reserving a significant part of our stylists' day. Payment can be made either in person at our salon or online here. This amount will be credited towards your appointment and can be refunded as long as at least 48 hours (2 days) notice is given before either rescheduling or a cancellation.

I had a digital perm at Jeju Hair. In total, it took 3 hours, which is acceptable to me as the effect is supposed to last 3 - 6 months. I was well-looked after - I had magazines to read, and was offered tea and water. Eunju was very friendly and chatty throughout. The second lady who was there and also worked on my perm was also very polite and nice.
About the perm itself, there are a few washes, applications of different serums (one to relax the hair, then one to neutralise it), some time to relax it under the hood, then more time to set the curls. Compared to getting hair bleached, dyed, and cut, it's really hassle-free. Digital perms come with a trim, so I just had the ends trimmed to keep my hair healthy.
